The expansion rolls out during the upcoming months next to a process for much simpler product returns for marketplace purchases.
Walmart launched its free, 2-day shipping for millions of products for the first time in January of 2017 for all orders of more than $35. That move was an attempt to challenge Amazon Prime due to requiring just a minimum purchase and no annual fee.
That same option for shipping will soon become available for Walmart’s marketplace as well. The retailer said it will work initially with hundreds of its higher performing sellers with its free two-day shipping with their eligible items in the United States. Walmart noted that the announcement was made this week but will begin over the coming months.
The company added that it was implementing two-day shipping in several ways. It will enable it for sellers that have their own internal capabilities as well as introducing the ability to implement geographical settings in order for two-day shipping to be available for areas based upon the location of the seller’s fulfillment network.
In addition, Walmart will work with third-party providers as a way to fulfill items, including Deliverr.
As well as two-day shipping, Walmart will simplify returns for products purchased through the online marketplace by offering a much easier method to manage returns.
Customers can now log into their account on Walmart.com and print a return label to have items directly shipped back to the sellers.
However, shipping is not the easiest method many times to manage returns. That is where the brick and mortar locations of Walmart come in handy. Beginning the middle of November, customers can return eligible purchases from marketplace at Walmart store Services desks.
Previously, items from Walmart could be returned at the stores, but not items purchased from sellers who are third-party.
Walmart added that over 140 million customers enter its stores each week, and 90% of people living in the U.S. today are within 10 miles of a Walmart location.
With the change taking place, Walmart will help to facilitate returns of marketplace items through shipping them back to the sellers on behalf of the customer, who will then be given a refund by the seller. All of the 4,700 Walmart stores in the U.S. will have this return option available.
