Apple Joins Instagram As iPhone 8 Rumors Swirl

Apple has joined Instagram. The Cupertino, California-based tech giant’s Instagram account was unveiled on Monday with slideshows that had been shot using the iPhone’s camera uploaded. After being in existence briefly Apple’s Instagram account had garnered approximately 350,000 followers after just nine posts.

The photos in Apple’s Instagram account are part of the ‘Shot on iPhone’ campaign being run by the tech giant and they are contributions from other users of Instagram. Interviews with the photographers behind the uploaded images were recorded and snippets of their statements are featured in short clips. Other users of Instagram are also encouraged to take part by using the tag #ShotoniPhone in their photos.

Shot on iPhone

This is not the first time that Apple is using crowdsourced photos for its campaign, Shot on iPhone, but this is the first time the campaign is on Instagram since the tech giant has traditionally kept away from social media platforms especially the ones that are in the control of potential rivals. A good example is Apple’s Twitter account which had existed for years before the iPhone maker made the effort to put up a user photo.

Apple’s first time to use the service was last year just prior to launching the iPhone and the tech giant has since then become a frequent advertiser on the microblogging platform. But the tweet count of the largest public company in the world by market capitalization is still zero as all its tweets are ads. Though Apple didn’t have an Instagram account prior to Monday, other products such as iBooks and Apple Music had one.

Instagram Stories

On the same day that the Instagram account was launched Apple also made use of the Stories feature on the social media platform. A spokesperson for the tech giant indicated that Apple would continue updating its account by adding new photos.

Apple’s ‘Shot on iPhone’ campaign on Instagram comes at a time when leaks have appeared suggesting that the upcoming version of the iPhone, which is expected to be released in September, will include a model in the copper gold color. Reports also indicate that the premium model of the next iPhone will possess an OLED display thereby giving it a sharper resolution compared to the iPhone 7 Plus. The next premium model of the iPhone is also expected to have facial recognition technology which will be used in unlocking the smartphone and other security functions.
